A birb

This week’s Tumblr collection is Tuesday, November 21: Birbs. I swear that wasn’t an intentional thing, what with the poultry-present holiday this week. I just had the most number of images for it.

clevermankaI’ve posted a weekly themed collection on my Tumblr nearly every week since October, 2011. Someday I’ll compile a list of them, with links to the dates. That day is not today.

Atlas of the Underworld –

Just let that roll off your tongue and imagine what it might look like. Probably not like what it is – The Atlas of the Underworld is, according to D.G. Van der Meer and D.J.J van Hinsbergen, “the first complete mapping of subducted plates in the Earth’s mantle and their geological interpretation.” Subducted plates refers to parts of the surface of the earth’s crust that have been pushed under other parts of the earth’s crust. This is a change in thinking, and an important new window on Earth’s crustal processes. Read full post

Friday!

Hey, since I think most folks here are in the U.S. (condolences to us all), if you could please chime in with if you’ll be around next Friday? This week has been tough for me (I’m still recovering from that stupid cold) and I’m wiped. If you need the OT for a refuge from family situations or something, though, let me know! I’m happy to put up a post, just didn’t want to do so if most people wouldn’t be checking in here since I think I might not be around much that day, either.

This will probably be the only time I feature a piece of art with all dudes on it, but this find is amazing.

“What is fascinating is that the representation of the human body is at a level of detail and musculature that one doesn’t find again until the classical period of Greek art 1,000 years later,” explained Davis. “It’s a spectacular find.”

Even more extraordinary, the husband-and-wife team point out, is that the meticulously carved combat scene was painstakingly etched on a piece of hard stone measuring just 3.6 centimeters, or just over 1.4 inches, in length. Indeed, many of the seal’s details, such as the intricate weaponry ornamentation and jewelry decoration, become clear only when viewed with a powerful camera lens and photomicroscopy.

Hello, beloveds. Amy is still having a rough time, so no history lesson this week. I had hoped to type up something for today but I didn’t even manage to get my winter clothes out this weekend–hopefully the temps won’t drop too much more before I make a second attempt at switching wardrobes. I wasn’t even up to doing laundry (which might become a problem exciting opportunity of wardrobe choices mid-week). Read full post
